Editorial policy
Open science and preprints
PURISUM adopts the open science practices of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science (2021): open publishing, preprints, open data, open metadata and a more transparent peer review.

1. Open science practices at PURISUM
| Diamond open access Free to read and publish, under a Creative Commons license. |
Preprints Manuscripts previously posted on preprint servers are accepted. |
| Open data Mandatory availability statement and data citable with a DOI. |
More transparent review Option to publish reports and to sign reviews. |
| Open metadata Metadata and references reusable without restriction. |
Identifiers DOIs for articles and data; ORCID for all authors. |
2. Preprints
PURISUM accepts manuscripts that have already been posted as preprints. This is not considered prior publication and does not affect the assessment.
| Server | Use |
|---|---|
| SciELO Preprints | Recommended for social sciences in Latin America |
| SocArXiv | Social sciences in general |
| Zenodo | Any discipline, with a DOI |
| Institutional repository | If it assigns a persistent identifier |
- At submission, authors state the server and the preprint DOI.
- If the preprint is public, reviewers could learn who the authors are; PURISUM still runs a double-blind process and asks reviewers not to look for them.
- After publication, authors update the preprint with a link to the published article's DOI.
- Later versions of the preprint posted during review must be reported to the editorial team.
3. Open peer review (optional)
The default model is double-blind. In addition, PURISUM offers two options that are never mandatory:
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Publish the reports | With the consent of authors and reviewers, the reports on the accepted version are published alongside the article. |
| Sign the review | Reviewers may disclose their name on the published report. If they do not consent, the report is published anonymously. |
Options are chosen during the process and do not influence the editorial decision. Authors select them in the submission form; reviewers, when accepting the invitation.
4. Data, code and materials
- Every manuscript includes a data availability statement. The rules are in Data and reproducibility.
- Data, code and instruments used are cited in the references, with their DOI.
- We recommend depositing them in a repository with a DOI before submission, so reviewers can consult them.
5. Open metadata and references
- Article metadata is released under CC0 1.0 and distributed via OAI-PMH and Crossref.
- Each article's references are deposited with Crossref as open references, following the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC).
- Each author is identified by ORCID, and their PURISUM publications can be linked automatically to their profile.
